Academic Teaching (2020-2021)

The academic half-day teaching in residency programs plays an important complementary role to learning from clinical activity.  It consolidates formal knowledge with clinical experience. The main objective of this teaching activity is for the residents to activate the learning cycle, acquire medical knowledge and clinically relevant material, and organize learning.  This is a protected time for learning during which residents are excused from clinical duties.
The Orthopedic Surgery educational curriculum is a two-year cycle that covers all major topics of the specialty over the course of the resident’s time in the program. Each teaching session is divided into basic science and core topics, and is conducted once a week, every Monday between 2:00 to 5:00 pm.  The residents give a presentation about basic sciences and the assigned faculty gives a lecture on core subspecialties.  The sessions emphasize clinical problem-solving with experts in the discipline.  The residents are expected to remain engaged throughout the session by participating and answering questions.  This protected time and setting is an ideal forum for developing the residents’ clinical reasoning skills and improving their competencies in communication, collaboration, and professionalism.
